Michael Harris

Hello, I'm Michael. I left my role as Chief Financial Officer at GPS Capital Markets to start a company called Athena, which builds software for the office of the CFO. I've spent my career in finance — starting at the bottom as a sales intern and working my way up to CFO — helping grow GPS from a founder-led startup into a global financial firm and acheived one of Utah’s most successful private company exits. Now I'm taking those lessons and turning them into software that helps other CFOs and their teams work smarter and simpler.

Outside of work, I've called Utah home most of my life. I'm an endurance swimmer, having completed events like the English Channel relay, Bear Lake 10K, Great Salt Lake 10K, and San Francisco Bridge to Bridge 10K. I'm passionate about service and currently serve with South Valley Services and Giving Angels, both focused on helping Utah families. I'm a husband and father, with family at the center of everything I do. I read whenever life slows down enough to let me.

I am excited to let everyone know that I have started my own company! After 12 and a half years at GPS, it being sold, and me helping integrate it into Corpay, it was time for a change of scenery. While I had been wanting to do this for over a year, this spring I gained conviction this is the rig...

I am building tools for the Office of the CFO. The Office of the CFO is essentially a term that means any department that reports up to the CFO. This is obviously accounting and finance related tools, but depending on the organization, it can capture other departments as well (e.g., Legal, Credit...

Counting calories has always been a pain. The apps are always cumbersome to keep track of everything you eat. Not only is it a bit of work to pull out the app and find the food you are looking for, but whenever you are eating a meal—unless you cooked it—it is a lot of guesswork to come up with th...

I just finished a book called Daily Rituals by Mason Currey. It is a very fun book and an interesting look into the lives of great creators. The book looks into the daily lives and creative habits of 163 or so authors, composers, artists, filmmakers, scientists, and other culturally significant p...

I Am Not Tracking You

There are a lot of ways that websites can track you and I am opting out of all of them. Ultimately I don’t think most people care too much if the websites they are using spy on them, but they would probably prefer that websites do not track them. I am consciously not putting those things in out o...

I have been experimenting with a new daily routine/schedule and it is working pretty well. Because I have started my own company, I want to make sure that I do actual real work, and am not getting distracted too easily. I listened to this podcast  by Andrew Huberman, at the behest of my brother J...
