Michael Harris

Hello, I'm Michael. I left my role as Chief Financial Officer at GPS Capital Markets to start a company called Athena, which builds software for the office of the CFO. I've spent my career in finance — starting at the bottom as a sales intern and working my way up to CFO — helping grow GPS from a founder-led startup into a global financial firm and acheived one of Utah’s most successful private company exits. Now I'm taking those lessons and turning them into software that helps other CFOs and their teams work smarter and simpler.

Outside of work, I've called Utah home most of my life. I'm an endurance swimmer, having completed events like the English Channel relay, Bear Lake 10K, Great Salt Lake 10K, and San Francisco Bridge to Bridge 10K. I'm passionate about service and currently serve with South Valley Services and Giving Angels, both focused on helping Utah families. I'm a husband and father, with family at the center of everything I do. I read whenever life slows down enough to let me.

I am excited to let everyone know that I have started my own company! After 12 and a half years at GPS, it being sold, and me helping integrate it into Corpay, it was time for a change of scenery. While I had been wanting to do this for over a year, this spring I gained conviction this is the rig...

So many people are worried about how AI is going to take over their jobs. They are shifting investments and careers to areas that are focusing on manual labor that is harder to automate, however, people need to focus their energies on getting paid for their mind. Focusing on the manual work is tr...

“If everyone thinks like you, you don’t need them.” — Turn the Ship Around! I love this principle. Back in my days in the corporate world, I would tell my team that “If we all agree, it’s probably a bad idea.” Jeff Bezos had a rule at Amazon where the most junior people would speak first and th...

Having Your Dreams Come True

“One of the worst punishments is having your dreams come true."  This is a very good quote from the series Foundation (Season 2, Episode 2). We often don't really know what will make us happy, or what we really want. We want a perfect representation of something, however, the reality of what tha...

As someone who has never been involved with a multi-level-marketing ("MLM") scheme before, I am glad I read this book. It shed light on the abuse that happens to most of the people who sell under one of these companies. There is a promise of freedom and riches, but most fail and go into debt to t...

The Art of Spending Money (Book Review)

One of the best books I have read in 2025 was Morgan Housel's "The Art of Spending Money." This book is not so much a book on spending money as it is about how to have a centered and well-balanced life. He is not prescriptive on how to spend money (if it were, then the book would be titled "The S...
